Job Overview

This role will lead the professional Commercial Management function to deliver the goals and aspirations of the client’s development and ongoing capital projects.

We are seeking an experienced Commercial Manager with a strong background in construction or civil engineering who will report to the Group Head of Capital Projects and manage a team of commercial managers nationally.

The role will require full commercial management of projects from inception to completion and will require close attention to the customer and all stakeholders throughout the full life cycle of the delivery.

Key responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Ensure end-to-end commercial management through the RIBA plan stages 0-7 in line with the 5-year business model
  • Effective negotiator and strategic approach to relationship management and dispute resolution
  • Work with project sponsors to provide construction cost knowledge and experience to develop the businesses requirements into robust project proposals which can be taken forward for investment appraisal and construction
  • Coach, motivate and lead the CM team of both internal staff and external consultants, leading by example to ensure the successful financial management of projects with effective engagement of all stakeholders
  • Input into pre-construction activities including selection of staff, recruitment and performance management of operational staff
  • Ensure fairness and harmony within the team always to the company’s ED&I policy
  • Demonstrate relentless drive, energy and determination to deliver a sustainable KPI performance and improvement
  • Resource the balance of core and contingent works to match the workload and allocation of CM staff to projects
  • Reporting progress and holding monthly meetings with the local teams to ensure effective communication on projects.

Skills & Experience
Key Skills and Experience would include but not limited to:

  • First class Commercial Management Skills (Pre and Post Contract)
  • Procurement knowledge
  • Experienced in construction dispute management (mediation and adjudication)
  • Estimating / Cost and Budget Control
  • Business acumen and team player
  • Fully capable of managing and working in an integrated model for development
  • Leader of People – good communicator
  • Good delegator and empowers CMs
  • Education; BSc / MSC Quantity Surveyor, Civil Engineer
  • Chartered status (RICs, MCIOB, MICE)
  • NEC suite of contracts / JCT knowledge
  • Risk / Value Manager
  • Excellent Negotiator
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence and have own car as travel is expected within the role.

Other skills which are highly valued include:

  • Good appreciation of the trends in the UK construction market
  • Awareness of Tender Price Index and fluctuations in the UK market
  • Port / marine work (or similar industrial) would be advantageous.
